Capt. John Prasad Menezes

Capt. Menezes has handled Admiralty Claims including Collision, Salvage, Grounding, Fire, Pollution, Towage, Constructive Total Loss, Wreck Removal, General Average and other casualties besides Sale and Purchase Inspections; Loss Prevention and Risk Management Surveys as per client requirement. He works as a Flag State Safety Inspector, Auditor and as Casualty Investigator for Flag Administrations. He has experience in offshore safety inspections of FPSO’s, MODU’s and tankers besides Safety Inspections of Passenger Vessels, bulk carriers and general cargo vessels. Appointed as Special Casualty Representative (SCR) for Salvage Operations at Mangalore Port.

Capt. Menezes is currently the Chairman of the Mission Seafarers India Association Mumbai and Immediate past Chairman of Institute of Chartered shipbrokers Madaras branch Chennai and was a Member of the Controlling Council Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Global). Presently Member of Education and Training Committee (ETC) of Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers International.

He was a member of the Nautical Institute Executive Council from 2008 to 2015 and Director/Trustee, Executive Board of NI Headquarters between 2016 and 2022.  Capt. Menezes has also served as an Independent Director on the board of Seven Islands Shipping Ltd., Mumbai, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., a Trustee of New Mangalore Port Trust, President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Director of Mangalore Special Economic Zone, Ltd.

He was Deputy Chairman of the IMO Committee of the Nautical Institute London for six years. He has previously served as Deputy Master of the Company of Master Mariners of India, Mumbai and served as Warden of the Court.

He is a visiting Faculty at Indian Maritime University, Chennai for Maritime Law and guest faculty at Mangalore University for Maritime studies and Maritime Security

Capt. Menezes has been an Expert Witness for maritime cases since 1992, and a practising Maritime Arbitrator and Mediator since 2013. He has presented various papers on Alternate Dispute Resolution at the International Conference of Maritime Arbitrators ICMA-2009 in Hamburg, at the ICMA-2015 in Hong Kong, the ICMA-2017 in Copenhagen, ICMA -2023 in Dubai and ICMA -2026 in Singapore. He is a Supporting Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association and a Fellow of the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA).

Empanelled as Arbitrator with Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA), Dubai International Arbitration Center, Dubai (DIAC), Mauritius International Arbitration Centre (MIAC), The Society for Affordable Redressal of Disputes – Ports (SAROD – Ports), Asia International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), Malaysia, China Maritime Arbitration Commission (CMAC), Beijing and Gujarat International Maritime Arbitration Center, Ahmedabad (GIMAC).

He has authored, “Voyage from Being a Seafarer to a Maritime Arbitrator” (Chapter 22) in the book ‘Maritime Skills on Vessels and Shore’ edited by Dr Capt. Vivek Jain.

After obtaining a Humanities degree from Osmania University, Capt. Menezes pursued an LLB from Mangalore University and his LLM in Maritime Law from London Metropolitan University. He has provided consultancy services to premier investigation agencies and global government bodies, including the Government of India. 

Capt. Menezes holds a Certificate of Competency – Master Mariner Foreign Going, issued by the Director General of Shipping, Government of India. He has completed his Professional Qualification Examination (PQE) of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), London.
